Stable Fuel Supply, Stable Prices
The Southwest's transportation fuel supply depends on a limited number of pipeline connections. Western Gateway adds new capacity to that system, helping protect New Mexico and neighboring states against the kind of price spikes and fuel supply disruptions that can follow a refinery outage or a single pipeline going offline. A more diversified supply network across the Southwest means more reliable fuel supply for New Mexico's businesses, farms, and families.
Environmental Protection and Mitigation
To minimize the impact of the new-build pipeline, the route is designed to maximize co-location by utilizing existing rights-of-way. Nearly the entire pipeline route in New Mexico is co-located with existing infrastructure. This strategy actively protects the local environment by reducing untouched land disturbance and avoiding sensitive environmental areas.
Respect for Land, Water and Cultural Resources
Co-locating within existing utility corridors is just the first step in Western Gateway’s commitment to protecting land, water, and cultural resources. As the project moves forward, we are working closely with regulatory agencies to implement industry-leading safeguards. This includes employing advanced techniques like Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) for trenchless water crossings and strictly adhering to Clean Water Act standards to keep local water sources safe. Furthermore, the project completely avoids all federally recognized tribal lands and proactively consults with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers to honor and preserve cultural resources long before any land disturbance begins.
